Waiting In Tubes

When I first started this painting 12 years ago I thought it was the best thing that ever happened to paint and, "weren't all those little pigment particles so lucky to be a part of this moment." Then I woke up the next morning after the paint dried, the turpentine I used evaporated, and the magic left, I hated it. I felt like a dope to make such a horrible painting. I hung on to the moment I felt with it for years. I tried to go back and fiddle around with it but the moment I originally had with it was to be lost forever. Recently after staring at it in my unfinished pile I decided to come to terms with it and rectify this sad painting in my studio. Turkey Umber and Zinc White came crashing in.
Maybe the moment I originally had with it wasn't technically executed well with my novice abilities. It's ok. Nature is still there. Paint is still waiting in the tubes wanting to be mastered and realized in great moments.

Ventured up north with a couple of good friends to visit another. New Hampshire is an interesting slice of humanity and nature. Up there you have some very liberal, anti-fed, friendly folks. Couple that with amazing landscape and some of the largest mountains on the east coast. Away from the South Philly smog and oil refineries. Away from the midnight shout fight on our street. They never have to lock their doors or look at a menu at the diner down the street. They know what they want and its hardly anything at all. Its simple unadulterated life without anyone elses hand in their pot.

Spending more time outside doing artwork this summer. I figure if I toss in a bit of outdoor pieces that makes that much less time making more artwork that just sits in my basement studio. This one is at Frankford between Girard and Delaware Ave. on what is called Bookspace. With their permission the good people in Bookspace allowed me to do whatever I wanted.
I love working outside. People come by to talk, just watch, offer coconut water and other pleasantries. Bookspace's neighbors "The Lighting Emporium" proposed a piece outside their space. More on that soon I hope.

In reference to my previous post here's that other Philadelphia Public School relic from days past. This fence is located at what is now a Buddhist Temple at Mckean and Mole St. in South Philly. I have no idea what the history is of this building and if it is the original school house.

Meredith Lindemon has an amazing work ethic. She is unstoppable. Providing clothes, the space, pizza, champagne, and make-up my wife Beth was able to get her pieces shot in these great "context" settings. This entire time I've been helping Beth shoot her pieces in front of these black backdrops and a single light off to the side or from above. It's great for documenting these awesome pieces but not great if you're trying to imagine them in context with reality. Here are a few winners that I shot that day.

Flash in one hand, camera in the other and red gel for the creation of another reality.

There's a shot in here, if you'll notice, of one of my favorite fence posts in the city (if one can have one of those). The Stephen Girard Elementary school behind it is new as of the 50's or 60's. The original fence and building seen here in the 30's. I want to hug whomever decided to keep the fence even though the older building may, at one point, have become too expensive to maintain. The detail of a globe and inscription of "PPS" (Philadelphia Public School) below are details you'd never find today. I've found other globe fences in the neighborhood too...hmm I smell another blog post.

Whenever I open a tube of white, mix it in my cup and slop it on a surface I always get chills and excitement. Everything's gonna be OK and all the bad guys have been defeated for the time being. In this instance I anxiously squeezed the entire tube and feverishly exploded all over several paintings I haven't touched in over 10 years or so! I can't quite explain the moment when you've been so confused and uninspired by something that's been staring at you in the corner of your studio. Its not bad enough to destroy it and you can't do anything with it either. Then all of a sudden its so "in your face" obvious that you can't get to it fast enough to take in the moment. I'm not saying these are done, just celebrating a revisitation to an old friend.

Visiting Austin

I had the opportunity to visit my friend Austin Dodson last week. I am an avid reader of his appropriately named blog Visiting Austin. He's moved out of the big city of Philadelphia to be a care taker at the Wallingford Community Art Center 20 minutes in the suburbs. He's been living and working on the grounds of an old mansion turned art center/potter's guild. I grew up taking classes here and helping my Mom out when she used to teach there. It always brings back my most favorite memories of getting lost in the woods and appreciating the beauty of that area.
My favorite time is during the fall. The smell of the dying leaves, the way they collect on top of each other in the creak. Even the trees reflect sound differently. I saw two (maybe the same one twice) red tail hawks migrating, one small fox and the usual squirels, cardinals and robins that are pretty abundant around here. So there I was camera in hand and Austin with his new dog Maddie chasing the moment and taking time to explore.

I'm catching up. Now that there is this Blog to tend to I find it rewarding and burdensome to let the 4 people that may or may not be reading this know what's happening. If anything else its a great snapshot for myself in where I'm at in my life with creativity.
So with that in mind I present to you a peak into an amazing trip I took to Cape Cod, MASS. I wish there was such a thing as smellovision because that was probably the first thing i remember. Piney-saltwater-seaweed-mildew-cedar. And quiet. No city sounds just osprey crows and seagulls fighting for position. I fell in love with the moment. The photos are a whole other process and really don't capture a lot of what I saw but I do love the framing and position in each moment with the light and breeze off the ocean.

Its boring to me just to document all the time. Luckily I haven't really heard for a while "get your camera and take a picture of this Jim." I don't feel that that's why I always take a photo. I've been happily shooting with this crappy webbie cam that Sony makes. Its portable not complicated to operate. I enjoy abstracting the simplest scene and extract the color and texture that's in front of me. Having the ability to move the camera and create moving images is a bonus in this situation. Now I'm confronted not only by the image but what direction I'd like to move the camera, how its going to zoom in and out or just stay stationary on a moving object.
For added pleasure I've been able to sneak some music into the videos. I've always loved sneaking music into a visually occupied viewer. The image is often what keeps someone in their seat while, before you know it, they are injected into the song. Its easier to dismiss a song or music if they are just listening and not relaxed or captivated by something at that second.
The subject in this instance was the fourth of July 2010.
The first one includes some fireworks (5:04) that a friend of mine was firing off in the adjacent neighborhood to the east of fairmount park and we just happened to catch it! I also had a kite tied to my belt for a long time.
The second video is a song I wrote about my wife Beth when we first started dating.

Portraits in the spring of 10

I've been having an interesting time loving photography again but in a much newer (to me) context. Departing from my previous experience shooting for the sake of a moment captured, I'm purely shooting it for the print. I haven't had such a good time "printing" since the early darkroom days. There's a sense of not knowing what these blobs of area are going to really look like until I lift the stencil up. There's a magic in that moment for me.
I can see it on the digital camera display when I shoot it. I can see again it on my computer screen, networking sites or whatever. These pieces hold for me an unmatched example of my love for the process, the creation of color, and the selection of negative space.

Last night was an extremely magical night. The last performance of Full of Sharp Places took place at the Philadelphia Magic Gardens. If you don't know about this place yet just hit the link.
Beyond the obvious aesthetic and history of this place and the amazing person that is Isaiah, I believe that this is one of the best musical venues in Philadelphia. Every note and vibration caries around the curved tile walls and then shoots right out into the sky. While performing the four of us were really able to wip the notes through the outside maze of tile brick and bottles. The threat of rain loomed over us only to start up 10 minutes after we finished. Thanks for everyone that made it and if you couldn't I'm sure there'll be another incarnation of such music in the future.
Thanks to Beth for shooting. I think she really understood the space and the sound through the maze enough to take some real nice footage.

From the Land of Polite

The churches here are huge.
Texans are polite.
Set out on a study of the music industry. This festival is a portal for the part of the machine that is trying to verse itself to the world. Record companies either hook you up or you play a free show and pay to get there and be heard.
Or do both.
It is a unique opportunity for bands to ever get a chance and do this. I'm not so sure I was sold on a lot of the bands that had gigantic lines to get in. Considering how much of it I was nonplussed by, I was wondering if either I was delusional or they were feeding into some sort of music marketing drama.
Free dirt lots, back of homes with goats and make shift barn stages were what we clung to. Occasional festival venues we actually had to pay to get in. Seeing so many bands last week did something to my ear. I feel desensitized from the sounds of all the instruments and little nuances that everyone made. Along with that, I have evolved from a lot of what I've been listening to or better yet, how I'm listening to it now.
The whole week had a great falling on the moment vibe. It felt like we magically found our bikes at a pawnshop. We won 25 tacos at Gringo Bingo. Countless other little moments made assured me that we still know how to travel in the moment. I don't think I'd ever move to Austin but maybe someday I'll revisit with more of a performance purpose.

In it for the fourth period

A couple of nights ago I traded photography for beer. The wissahickon hockey league had a kick off scrimmage for the season and I was on it. Not having ever shot sports like this before I was somewhat hesitant. I learned a bit more about my camera's AF features and auto exposure settings. There's definitely things in that little black box that I had no idea it knew how to do; like a sensor that detects movement and then focuses constantly around the exposure field. I could have benefited from having a longer lens but that's getting a little ahead of the game. I spilled beer on my camera at one point and Nikons seem to come with a guzzle switch. You can actually take the batteries out and pour beer on it and it still works!
Everyone that's been on the ice the whole time have this mental image of their cold, beer-filled cooler waiting for them at the end of the game. The stinky sweat filled locker room cools off instantly with a hi-life in your hand. They hang out talk about the game, the janitor kicking them out, music, or whatever else top secret conversation that can't be repeated outside the locker room walls.
This season has promises of classic rock and roll band themed teams. I personally feel that a more aggressive punk theme would have fit better with their style but that's just me.

I visited friggin paradise. The photos here only reflect the first hour or so before the batteries ran out in my camera. I was thoroughly inspired. It was deeper than the beauty of the house and the surroundings. It was the moment it created. Hopefully this truncated photo set continues ideas through the winter and spring. I'm taking note especially of the colors I found near the spring.

After spending weeks preparing. I spent a few hours today making a few paintings. I wanted to link my photography to my painting. I haven't printed my work lately in the traditional sense. What I have done is started making stencils of a few average photographs that I've noticed got pretty interesting once translated into a stencil and covered with paint.

This one has a stencil I made from a photograph of a music space I had 10 years ago.
I still love the unintentional that surrounds.

That's right ladies and gentlemen puddle painting known as "Ice Capedes" has been sold. Drexel University's 6th Annual Art Auction on Friday March 6th was a huge success. My little painting sat alone with no bids at the silent auction for about an hour until someone offered a bid. I noticed someone shortly after was convinced of the same idea and upped the bid another 5 dollars! I waited the hole night, entertaining a few unexpected friends and sucking down as much free food and drink as I could feed myself. If you look carefully in the flicker link above you may be able to find me doing just that. Congratulations to the Dupont Chemical employee that was moved by my piece enough do drop 45 big ones down on my piece. I was moved by the fact that he was a chemist at Dupont and wanted to hang his piece in his office at work while he dreamed up ways to protect peoples' carpets and ways to reformulate polyurathane that could help my paintings!

Ok, it has been a while but I had a bad taste in my mouth with all the "mob" crap that was going on from phillies to pinatas. In the beginning of December Red Ox ventured up to Brooklyn to Mark Goodman's Strange Weather studio. It was definitely a learning experience. We hope to finish our album in the next few months and let it speak for itself. In the meantime here are a few photos from the 3 days of work we put in there.

It's Pinata time everyone, and Carnival Cruise picked the weekend between Barack Obama's win and the Phillies winning the World Series in Philadelphia. Ridiculous. This sucked SOOOO bad.
1) There was very little planning for the thousands of people who showed up.
2) No crowd control.
3) All the candy was shitty and generic.
4) Who really does give a shit about Carnival Cruise anyway.

As you may be able to tell from these shots we had to start making our own fun in between staring at the totally excessive pinata and laughing at the futile attempt of of the Cruise staff controlling the angry mob hungry for candy.

At the end it was a total bust. Philly misbehaved so much that they punished us by not smashing the pinata with the big plastic wrecking ball. Shame on us.

Last night, if you haven't heard, the Phillies won the World Series. The last 3 innings were a real cliff hanger. I was convinced something bad was going to happen to our boys. Then while I glanced away for a second we did it! Before I even saw the TV again I heard the whole city exhale. Outside a heard of horns, firecrackers, screaming the whole house was all raised up and shit. I'm not one to take the best photos after boozing it up a bit so excuse the blurriness.

I was playing around with two photos from the MONA shoot last night. I especially loved the long exposure shots showing the movement and color from the dresses. I just took these two favorites bumped up the contrast, brightness, and erased some of the asphalt. I know the purist left me last night as i was doing this but I felt these images needed a bit more than the everyday canned moment that I'm normally so romantic about.

I recently went to MONA (Made On North American) for a photo shoot with Becca Pulver's handmade dresses she made for her wedding last year. Afterwards we went inside for a party in their studio. They showed off some of the things they had been laboring on recently as well as good beer and music. It was Joe Pattituci's "Tadoma" and friends "Battle Ready" to follow. Both sets were short and sweet and could have gone on for hours if it wasn't for some guy who thought it'd be a good idea to take lots of acid and make crow noises all night. Becca kicked him out and we all sighed under our breath.
I have grown very fond of "work shops" as of late. You'll find near the end of the slide show I snuck upstairs to find an imaculate lair of a wood shop. I loved every bit from the glowing radio to the sawdusted tables.

Me and the wifey went out to the outskirts of Reading to find a saddle repair shop. Aaron had everything here. The place wreaked of beautiful leather and lacquer. Here are a few of the saddles he repaired and was putting out for sale. A few where there on consignment from local saddle smiths.
